How to Apply for an LTC or FID Card in Massachusetts

  • Residents: Submit your completed application to the police department in the city or town where you reside.
  • Non-Residents: Submit your application to the Firearms Records Bureau.
Pay the required fee:
  • LTC: $100
  • FID: $100 (or $25 for applicants under 18 years old)

Step 5: Undergo Background Checks and Interview

  • The licensing authority will conduct state and federal background checks, including fingerprinting and a review of mental health records.
  • An in-person interview may be required.

Step 6: Await Approval

  • The licensing authority has up to 60 days to process your application.
  • You will be notified once a decision has been made.

  • If approved, you will receive your LTC or FID card, which is valid for 6 years.
